Many of the symptoms of a stomach ulcer (including feeling of fullness, bloating, burping, heartburn, and/or nausea) overlap with other gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, but the main discerning symptom is burning stomach pain. If you frequently reach for antacids, or need food in your stomach to feel less pain, you may have an ulcer. A gastroenterologist can diagnose ulcers.
Sometimes ulcers can occur on the inside of the upper portion of your small intestine, too, and together these duodenal ulcers and stomach (gastric) ulcers are called peptic ulcers. The most common causes of peptic ulcers are infection with the bacterium H. pylori and overuse of aspirin and other pain medications such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), which block the stomach from being able to repair itself. Spicy foods and stress used to be blamed for peptic ulcers, but while those can certainly either contribute to the conditions that predispose you to ulcer development or make your symptoms worse, they in themselves are not to blame.
H. pylori is an interesting bacterium in that there is debate if it is a normal inhabitant of your stomach and only sometimes causes problems, or if it is a microbe that should be eliminated. Conventional treatment consists of antibiotics to kill the H. pylori and acid-blocking or neutralizing medication to reduce stomach acid so the lining can heal. However, many cases of H. pylori are resistant to antibiotics.
Numerous Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces probiotics have antagonistic abilities against H. pylori and are being tested in combination with conventional therapy. These probiotics, when given in addition to triple-antibiotic therapy, increase H. pylori elimination rates and decrease side effects from the antibiotic treatment. Probiotics can help you thwart attacks from the causes of stomach ulcers.
